The fight tends to turn into a clusterfuck of a damage race, but if you bring the right spells it’s not too bad. Lots of mana regen is useful too, and of course shields. After all, it’s not going to dodge your spells. In my experience, if you’re going up against the Gate you want big area-of-effect attacks, especially flame. I think I've made it to The Gate with every character now, but I still only have a win with Reva.
